Creating Inclusive Environments

Creating an inclusive environment is essential to supporting exceptional people's social and educational development, serving as a foundation for developing societal awareness and acceptance of people with disabilities. Inclusion is a critical piece for building a learning community that supports all learners, allowing the employee to focus their attention on goals and increase their cooperation and confidence.

Including employees with autism spectrum disorders requires new management practices, instructional support, and motivational strategies. When we can accommodate the unique needs of the students with autism, we indirectly support the needs of typical learners as well. These results of providing supports targeted to few and benefiting all is not only true in schools; it applies to the workplace too.

Dr. Haskins’ research and methods have shown that providing choice and increasing autonomy significantly influences motivation, learning, and performance outcomes for neurodivergent individuals. In her seminal 2012 pilot study, she illuminated the implementation of universal principles that increase motivation and support sustained performance for neurotypical and autistic students. Educators and leaders across industries also found that these changes were easy to implement and enhanced enthusiasm and engagement with learning. Over the last decade, she has successfully implemented these methodologies in higher education and competitive workplaces. She continues to monitor these approaches to improve outcomes for neurodivergent students and employees and create more inclusive environments for learning and work.
